Small Works Department

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with JM Jones, a medium sized Building Contractor in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England the TQS's were swapped around each year to work with a different Senior Surveyor. This gave us more experience of different approaches to Quantity Surveying as well as the interest in working on different projects.

I worked under the supervision of a Senior Quantity Surveyor but I undertook all of the QS duties myself on small works projects. The projects included a small factory extension, replacement of balconies on a block of flats, small extensions to a church and similar sized projects. I had to place orders for subcontractors and suppliers as well as working out bonus payments for directly employed labour.

The work entailed visiting the sites regularly as the projects did not generally last more than a few weeks. It gave me the experience of working hands on with projects of my own and I considered this to be excellent training.

At the same time I was also the JM Jones Plumbing Department Surveyor.
