Rank Hovis McDougall Head Office in Windsor

This was a purpose built office block in Windsor in Berkshire. It was constructed on the site of the council offices that were demolished during the construction of the new building. The new RHM building was a concrete frame with an underground car park.

The brickwork comprised of many special bricks and the bricks were hand made in Gloucestershire. It was my responsibility to check the bricks in storage each month for main valuations and to measure and value the subcontract bricklayers works on site.

I assisted with the valuation and bonus payments of the directly employed carpenters on the project. There was considerable hardwood joinery on this building.

I also valued the roofing works, there were three subcontract roofers. The main roofs were slate tiled, many roofs also had aluminium coverings and there was also built up felt roofing in planters called Famflex.

In addition to these subcontract packages I also assisted with the other subcontract works with my Senior Surveyor. I would send out subcontract packages for pricing, analyse the results, put together the documents for the Buying Department to send out. Following the letting of the subcontracts I would assist again in the valuation of subcontractor works and payment of invoices for major suppliers etc.

Within the building there was a special room called the Founders Room that had to be constructed to look like an office in the 1800's in Hull. This involved utilising old building materials (fireplace) and old decoration techniques such as figure graining the doors.

On main valuation days I would assist by valuing the materials on site (as well as the bricks stored off site) and agree these with the Assistant PQS from the Clients Quantity Surveyors, Davis, Belfield and Everest. In addition I would also provide my Senior Surveyor with relevant measures of works in progress.

Once main valuations had been completed I would assist the Senior Surveyor in the production of internal cost value reports and cash flow forecasts.
