As the project at Heston was coming to a conclusion I moved site office to Britwell and based myself there and continued to visit Heston. The regional office for WE Chivers (Head Office was in Devizes, Wiltshire) was in Reading in Berkshire.
The project at Britwell School was a two storey steel framed and brick clad construction. The works were not particularly complicated and I was responsible for placing orders with subcontractors and suppliers after obtaining quotes. I valued the groundworks and the steel frame subcontractor prior to being transferred to a bigger and more challenging contract at Bramshill Police College.
At Britwell I liaised with the PQS from Berkshire County Council and ensured that the Works were fairly valued and we asked for payment for variations. This process was hindered as one of the Engineers for WE Chivers had made a substantial error in the setting out of the foundations and endeavoured to cover this up from the Clerk of Works and everyone else. However, his error became glaringly appearant once the steel frame was being erected as the base plates were not in the centre of the foundations. The remedial works required put the project back both in terms of time and money.
