I was the Principal Quantity Surveyor for AMEC Piling on this project that required the stablisation of the embankment to the London Transport rail lines just outside of Chigwell station.
The site was semi forested and this had to be cleared. Mini piling rigs were used to drill down into the embankment and stablise it. Access was difficult and there were numerous records to be kept to ensure that AMEC's interests were maintained. I had to visit site regularly and liaise a lot with the Site Manager.
This project was carried out using the NEC Contract and therefore early warning notices, variations and notices were critically important. Therefore I had to ensure that letters were written and followed up with pricing of variations, agreement of records etc with London Transport.
There were very few subcontractors on the project but I had to carry out the cost reporting for AMEC and prepare interim valuations. Near the end of the project, I prepared a brief claim document for discussion and we (the AMEC Piling Commercial Director and I) went to meet with London Transport representatives. The claim document was briefly discussed and as financial matters had been well documented a settlement was easily achieved in the 30 minute meeting to the satisfaction of both parties.
