British Airways Medical Centre

Having been transferred from the Hampton Water Works project, I had expected to start work on the new Young Offenders units project at Huntercombe between Henley and Wallingford, Oxfordshire. However due to riots in the prison at Strangeways the budget money was used for this and my project was delayed. As a result I was given this project to be Contractor QS, along with RAF Welford and RAF Greenham Common.

British Airways had planned to convert some ground floor offices to a medical centre for staff and other associated people. There was considerable difficulty with bringing to site the required services that entailed that I had to keep extensive records together with the Site Manager.

The works were fast track and overtime and weekends were worked. Many of the workers were directly employed and bonus payments had to be calculated and agreed, this was part of my responsibility on this project.

There were also subcontractors to administer. I sought quotations, placed orders and valued works to final account. Some works were also required in obtaining passes to site and ensuring that subcontractors and their employees were aware of British Airways requirements.

The project was completed pretty much on programme and made the return expected. British Airways was a priority client for Kier office in Heathrow at that time.
